On July 12, Nitride Semiconductor Co., Ltd. of Tokushima, Japan filed a patent infringement lawsuit against the US electronic component distributor Digi-Key Corp. The UV-LED products sold online by Digi-Key Corp are manufactured by RayVio Corp, a UV-LED manufacturer in Haywood, California.
Nitride Semiconductor applied for a lock-up order (including the destruction of infringing products) and damages, claiming that Digi-Key and RayVio manufacture and sell UV-LED products in violation of Nitride's patent (JP 3,285,341, "Methods for Manufacturing Gallium Nitride Compound Semiconductors").
According to the US patent corresponding to the above Japanese patent, Nitrid previously filed a patent infringement lawsuit against RayVio in the District Court for the Northern District of California, USA on May 23, 2017, and in the US District Court of Minnesota on September 22, 2017. Digi-Key filed a patent infringement lawsuit.
Nitride said that Professor Shiro Sakai of Tokushima University in Japan successfully developed the first highly efficient UV-LED in 2000 and has been investing heavily in R&D, production and sales of UV-LEDs. Nitride stated that it will take decisive action to combat infringers in any country, as appropriate and necessary, to protect its patents and other intellectual property rights.
