“This feature has never been found in other materials in the past,” Lu said. The research he led has been published in the natural journal series Light: Science and Applications. "By changing the number of layers, we can tightly control the energy gap and determine the properties of the material, such as the color emitted by the LED."

“The different colors of the sample can be seen fairly clearly through the microscope, and it will tell you how many layers there are,” Lu said.

Lu’s research team found that the single-layer phosphonene has a light gap of 1.75 eV, which is equivalent to a red wavelength of 700 nm. As the number of layers increases, the optical gap becomes smaller. For example, the light gap value at 5 layers is 0.8 electron volts, and the red light wavelength is about 1,550 nm. As for the thicker laminate, the optical gap value is about 0.3 eV, which is equivalent to a 3.5 micron mid-band red light.

Phosphorene performs better in enamel than in bismuth, Lu said. "Because the surface state of phosphene can be minimized, it is different from the enthalpy that is too thick for surface conditions to be used in thin and light states."
