Samsung has always liked to experiment with different ideas and technologies, but most of the prototype products created by the company cannot enter the market. A truly innovative mobile phone, Galaxy Round, launched three years ago by Samsung. The Galaxy Round is one of the first smartphones to feature a flexible display. At about the same time LG released a similar phone called G Flex, which has a slightly larger flexible display.
However, in 2013, only LG had the courage to sell G Flex worldwide. Samsung said at the time that the Galaxy Round was a concept phone used to test the market reaction, so it was only sold in South Korea at the time.
But now it seems that both companies are ready for a new wave of innovative products. With Samsung and LG leading the smartphone display market, three years is enough to put some innovative technologies into practice. Modern securities analyst Kim Don-won said Samsung and LG plan to launch a collapsible smartphone in 2017. 2017 will be the first year of a collapsible smartphone. After the launch of Korean companies, other global competitors such as Apple and Google may launch their own versions in 2018.
Analysts say the introduction of folding phones offers these companies some leverage to shake the saturated smartphone market. The analyst believes that Samsung and LG display departments are likely to start producing the sixth generation of flexible OLED panels.
Samsung Mobile Chief Koh Dong-jin said before that Samsung is already developing a collapsible smartphone. If the test proves that it meets market expectations, then the phone should be mass-produced.
