Microsoft's head-mounted device, HoloLens, quickly senses the surrounding environment. Caltech and the University of Southern California (USC) research team are trying to provide real-time verbal tips with HoloLens to help visually impaired people find their destination or item safely.

According to reports, HoloLens excels at digesting visual data and creating spatial maps showing where there are walls, obstacles and doors. The research team used the sound to remind the visually impaired who had some obstacles. For example, when the visually impaired person hit the wall, the wall would emit a white noise.

The research team recruited a total of seven visually impaired people to participate in the test, first providing simple training, then requesting specific tasks, and following the HoloLens verbal tips to the destination, but avoid obstacles in the process. After the subject entered the building, he followed the instructions of HoloLens and went to the room on the second floor. HoloLens will remind you that there is a ladder in front, and there are handrails in it.

If the route is not obstructed, HoloLens will continue to issue a "Follow me" command to instruct the user to move forward. The seven subjects successfully reached their destination for the first time, and they were much faster than no navigation assistance. Even one of the subjects felt that the system was too fun to purchase.

HoloLens is designed for people with normal vision, but is expected to be the right eye of the visually impaired, but still in the prototype stage, the future will help the visually impaired to find the hotel room, or find the store.
