Gartner, the world's leading information technology research and consulting firm, recently highlighted the major technological trends in 2017 that are strategic to most companies.
Gartner defines strategic technology trends as strategic technology trends that have enormous disruptive potential, are out of the early stages, and are expanding in scope and use; these trends are rapidly growing, highly volatile, and expected to reach a critical point in the next five years.
David Cearley, vice president and academician of Gartner, said: "The top ten strategic technology trends in 2017 provide a stage for Gartner's Intelligent Digital Mesh. The first three trends reflect 'intelligent everywhere'. How data science technologies and methods will evolve, toward advanced machine learning and artificial intelligence, and then apply intelligent physics and software-based systems to learning and adaptive programming. The next three trends are dominated by the digital world. The physical and digital worlds are becoming inextricably linked. The last four trends provide the platform and service network needed for smart digital grids."
Technology trends
The top ten strategic technology development trends for 2017 are as follows:
Artificial intelligence and advanced machine learningArtificial intelligence (AI) and advanced machine learning (ML) consist of many technologies and technologies (such as deep learning, neural networks, natural language processing (NLP). More advanced technologies will go beyond traditional rules-based algorithms to create understandable, Learning, predicting, adapting, and even autonomous systems. That's why smart machines become "intelligent."
Cearley believes: "Application of artificial intelligence and advanced machine learning will lead to a range of intelligent functions, including physical devices (robots, driverless cars and consumer electronics) and applications and services (virtual personal assistants [VPA] and smart consultants). Obviously, these features will be presented as a new class of smart applications and objects that provide embedded intelligence for a wide range of network devices and existing software and service solutions."
Smart applicationSmart applications such as VPA will perform some of the functions of the human assistant, making everyday tasks easier (for example, optimizing the sorting of emails) and improving user productivity (highlighting the most important content and interactions). Other smart applications such as virtual account assistants will be more focused on tasks in areas such as sales and customer service. Therefore, these smart applications have the potential to change the nature of the work and the structure of the workplace.
Cearley pointed out: "In the next 10 years, almost every application and service will contain a certain amount of artificial intelligence. This will become a long-term development trend, and continue to develop and expand artificial intelligence and machine learning applications and services."
Intelligent objectIntelligent objects are physical objects that go beyond the implementation of rigid programming models, using artificial intelligence and machine learning to achieve advanced behavior, and more natural interaction with the surrounding environment and humans. As smart objects such as drones, driverless cars, and smart home appliances continue to grow, Gartner expects individual smart objects to evolve into collaborative smart object models.
Virtual and augmented realityImmersive technologies, such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), will change the way people, people and software systems interact. Cearley believes: "By 2021, the market for immersive consumer and commercial content and applications will change dramatically. VR and AR functions will be combined with digital grids to form a more seamless device system that provides super personalization and Inter-related applications and services that orchestrat the flow of information that users receive. An environment that combines multiple mobile, wearables, IoT, and mass sensors will extend the immersive application beyond the single and single-person experience. Space will interact with objects, and eventually they will connect through the grid and work with the immersive virtual world."
Digital twinsDigital Twin is a dynamic software model of physical things or systems that relies on sensor data to understand its state, respond to changes, improve operations, and add value. Digital hygiene includes a combination of metadata (eg, classification, composition, and structure), conditions or states (eg, position and temperature), event data (eg, time series), and analysis (eg, algorithms and rules).
In three to five years, hundreds of millions of items will be presented by digital students. Enterprises will use digital health to proactively repair and plan equipment services, design manufacturing processes, operate plants, predict equipment failures or improve operational efficiency, and improve product development. As a result, digital hygiene will eventually become a proxy for technicians in combination with traditional monitoring equipment and controls such as pressure gauges and pressure valves.
Blockchain and distributed ledgerBlockchain is a distributed Ledgers, and value exchange transactions (calculated in bitcoin or other tokens) are grouped into blocks. Each block is linked to the previous block and recorded on the peer-to-peer network using an encrypted trust and guarantee mechanism. The concept of blockchain and distributed ledgers is gaining attention and they bring hope to changing the industry's operating model. Although the current selling point is still dominated by the financial services industry, its application prospects are broad, including: music distribution, identity verification, ownership registration and supply chain.
Cearley said: "Distributed ledgers will most likely trigger change, but most plans are still in the early stages of Alpha or Beta testing."
Conversation systemCurrently, the conversation interface focuses on Chatbot and microphone-enabled devices (such as speakers, smartphones, tablets, PCs, and cars). However, digital grids have a growing array of endpoints through which people access applications and information, or interact with others, social groups, governments, and businesses. Device networks are no longer limited to traditional desktop and mobile devices, and they cover a wide range of endpoints that humans may interact with. As the device network continues to evolve, the connectivity model will expand further, and greater collaborative interaction between devices will emerge, laying the groundwork for a continuous new digital environment experience.
Grid application and service architectureIn the Grid Application and Service Architecture (MASA), mobile applications, web applications, desktop applications, and IoT applications link to a wide range of back-end service networks, creating content that users see as "applications." . The architecture encapsulates services and uses artificial intelligence at multiple levels and across enterprise boundaries to balance the need for service flexibility and scalability while organizing and restarting services. MASA enables users to get an optimized solution for target endpoints in digital grids (eg computers, smartphones, cars) and their continuous experience when switching between these different channels.
Digital technology platformThe digital technology platform provides the basic building blocks for digital enterprises and becomes a key driving factor for digital services. Gartner identified five key points for implementing new digital business capabilities and business models—information systems, customer experience, analytics and intelligence, the Internet of Things and the business ecosystem. Each enterprise will build some platforms consisting of these five digital technology platforms. These platforms provide the basic building blocks for digital services and will be a key driver of digital business.
Adaptive security architectureIntelligent digital grids and related digital technology platforms and application architectures will create an increasingly complex world of security. Cearley believes that “a mature security technology should serve as a benchmark for securing the IoT platform. Monitoring user and entity behavior is an especially important addition to the Internet of Things. However, the IoT boundary is a new area for many IT security professionals to generate weak areas. The frontiers often require new remediation tools and processes, and the IoT platform must take these factors into account."
