Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne designed a flexible four-rotor aircraft based on the characteristics of the creature. It is not easy to crash.
There are three ways to design a crash drone:
First, protect the propeller and protect it with a drone frame or propeller shield. Most commercial drones have similar devices. With this level of protection, drones are unlikely to hit people. However, because the propeller protection device is rigid, the UAV itself is easily damaged during a collision.
In the second type, the drone can be buffered during collision so as not to damage the components. This method is more effective for protection. How to design it? One way is to install a flexible, retractable connector that allows the drone's frame to be dispersed. As a result, drones do have stronger collision avoidance capabilities, but they are also "soft" during flight, and there are many problems with their structure and stability.
The third method is the most advanced. We use a flexible, rotatable cage to cover the drone. In some applications, it is good to cover a cage, but the cage will cause the drone to increase in size, with a maximum increase of 60%, and the chance of hitting something will increase. The cage will also increase the weight, leading to drone's life time and shortened flight distance.
The idea of ​​the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne combined the three methods mentioned above. They developed a drone, and when the drone is about to collide with something else, the frame will become flexible from the hard.
The design was inspired by insect wings. When flying, insect wings must remain rigid and absorb the impact but they are flexible. Because of this, when the insects collide with other things, the wings will fold. This fold is reversible.
For example, the wasps' wings are quite stiff, but it can change from hard to flexible, so that the wings are both mechanically resilient without sacrificing flight performance. The Wasps’ wings can effectively resist collisions and will not exceed the load without sacrificing flight performance.
