Fairchild Semiconductor Introduces Compact LED Backlighting Solution

Fairchild launched the compact and flexible backlighting Solution FAN5341 on April 1 to meet the needs of today's battery-powered portable electronics customers to save energy and achieve more functionality. The FAN5341 is a highly efficient LED driver solution that enhances the brightness and resolution of a portable design while providing 32 levels of dimming and driving up to five white LEDs in series. By driving serial LEDs, the device ensures that all LEDs used in mobile phones, digital cameras, GPS devices, MP3 players and other devices that use small LED displays have equal brightness.

The boost LED driver operates at a 1.2MHz switching frequency and integrates a Schottky diode to minimize external passive components and overall board space. Using the FAN5341's simple single-wire interface, designers can easily control the brightness level of LEDs by passing digital pulses from the microcontroller to the FAN5341. In addition, because this lighting solution drives three to five serial LEDs, each LED passes the same current, ensuring the same brightness. In addition, the device delivers efficiencies as high as 83%, minimizing power consumption and meeting the space and power requirements of a portable design. The FAN5341 is available in a compact, low profile 2mm x 2mm UMLP package. The FAN5341 is the newest member of Fairchild's portfolio of portable application lighting solutions.
