Saipan smartphones will stop shipping this summer

Nokia recently announced that it will stop shipments of Saipan smartphones this summer, and will fully switch to the Microsoft Windows Phone platform.

Nokia said that the future of its smart phones will fully adopt the Microsoft Windows Phone system. Nokia said: "The launch of a Saipan cell phone takes 22 months, while the Windows Phone phone takes less than 1 year. Kantar Worldpanel, a market research company, estimates that Saipan’s share of the European smartphone market was approximately 1.8% in the first three months to the end of April, down from 8% in the same period last year. Saipan’s current share of the Chinese smartphone market is still 2%.

In the first quarter of this year, Nokia’s Symbian mobile phone sales were only 500,000 units, which is lower than the 5.6 million units of the Lumia handset. This means that Saipan's mobile phone market share in the global smartphone market is less than 5%.
