Just 20 miles east of Nevada Parks, a factory is rising in the desert. It doesn't look special, it's just a huge mix of reinforced concrete. However, this factory, called Gigafactory, connects Tesla's lifeline and connects the “Iron Man†Musk with a distant blueprint for future transportation.
Gigafactory is the manufacturing site for Tesla's car batteries. Previously, Tesla had been importing batteries from Asia, but Tesla had to build a battery factory if it were to meet its goal of producing 500,000 a year.
Musk, who sat in the factory hall, said:
This factory is a machine that builds machines.
The current site, which covers an area of 3,000 acres (about 12 square kilometers), is located in a new plant in Nevada, and will become one of the largest buildings in the world after its official completion. At present, the floor area of buildings completed in the factory is only one-sixth of the total planned construction area. At the same time, Musk promised that the factory would be very beautiful.
Gigafactory was opened in June 2014. Musk stated that electric vehicle batteries will reach the assembly line next year. Now, the factory has completed 14% of the total project, but there are already more than 1,000 employees who are rushing out of work seven days a week.
These workers have now built Powerwall and Powerpack, as well as energy savings components built from batteries produced at the Fremont plant in Tesla, California.
On the assembly line in the factory, the robots take on a large part of the role, and engineers work in a place not far from the assembly line. The factory wrote "Reno Supercharger", which is a nickname for the Tesla electric vehicle quick charging station.
Although the plant can be automated to a large extent, machines cannot do everything, so Tesla will employ 6,500 people to work at Gigafactory.
Tesla plans to produce 500,000 Model 3s in 2018, and the only way it can be achieved is that Tesla can increase its battery production capacity while reducing production costs. As more and more automakers begin to build hybrid cars and electric vehicles, the demand for lithium-ion batteries will increase worldwide. Therefore, self-sufficiency to complete battery production is the best choice for Tesla.
According to Brook Porter, longtime partner of venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins:
If you want to occupy more than 50% of the market, unless you control the supply chain, you will be at a disadvantage. Now, Musk has controlled the supply chain.
The Gigafactory is a co-crystallization of companies such as Panasonic, which allows all raw materials to be produced under the roof of such a giant into the batteries needed for electric vehicles. From the manufacture of a single battery, to the assembly of the battery needed for the entire Model S, to the storage of energy in a battery, Gigafactory's assembly line can be completed. Tesla did not disclose the cost of producing batteries in the Gigafactory, but said that the cost would be reduced by 30%.
Gigafactory not only allowed Tesla to produce its own batteries, but also allowed Tesla to quickly develop new battery chemistry and technology. Tesla is now self-sufficient and does not need to wait for suppliers to produce new batteries. This is crucial for Musk’s “Plan 2â€: building cool solar roofs and seamlessly integrated battery storage products; continuing to expand the product line of electric vehicles, allowing EVs to enter all areas of society; and developing safety factors for humans to drive 10 times of autopilot technology; let your car make money for you when you are free.
Gigafactory is very much able to reflect the style of "Iron Man" Musk, and tomorrow's Gigafactory will not mean that the end of Muske's ambition.
Musk stated:
Tesla will be able to build Gigafactory anywhere in the world, whether it be Europe, China or India.
Now in Nevada, Tesla has set aside 1864 hectares of spare space for the Gigafactory to prevent the factory from being insufficient.
