GSMA advocates the promotion of greener cellular base stations
GSM AssociaTIon has released its green power initiative for mobile to ensure that environmental issues are highly valued on the mobile-oriented agenda.
Its goal is to promote the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind or sustainable biofuels, and to power 118,000 new base stations and existing independent base stations in developing countries by 2012.
The industry organization said that after achieving this goal, it will save 2.5 billion liters of diesel per year and reduce carbon emissions by up to 6.3 million tons per year.
The GSMA, which represents the mobile communications industry, predicts that up to 50% of new independent base stations in developing countries may be powered by renewable energy by 2012.
This initiative is supported by 25 mobile operators, and it will provide various support and expertise to facilitate the deployment of such "green" base stations.
"As they strive to bring the benefits of mobile coverage to as many people as possible, operators need to find reliable, sustainable, and economical energy for places beyond the reach of the national grid," said GSMA CEO Rob Conway.
"Through our development fund, GSMA has established deep expertise in solar, wind and other renewable energy fields, allowing mobile operators to choose to help them connect to areas where wireless links have not yet been established, while reducing operations Cost and minimize environmental damage. "
The association ’s development fund estimates that only 1,500 base stations worldwide are powered by at least one form of renewable energy.
Current challenges include commercial viability, equipment availability, and lack of expertise. However, the organization estimates that rising diesel prices and declining costs of renewable energy equipment mean that operators may invest in green energy for base stations. As little as 24 months can cover the investment cost.
The development fund has collaborated with several mobile operators to develop renewable energy solutions for various geographically dispersed base stations. For example, the development fund has deployed wind and solar power on the Pacific island of Vanuatu to power 17 new base stations.
After successful pilot deployments with GSMA and Ericsson, Indian operator Idea Cellular is now using waste cooking oil to help power more than 350 base stations in Andhra Pradesh state, where traditional electricity may be unstable. These base stations can be powered by up to 80% diesel fuel mixed with 20% waste cooking oil to burn.
