Overview:
Today, the industry continues to require on-the-go power management, and wireless (inductive) charging solutions are becoming more popular in the marketplace. Although the energy efficiency is not as high as the existing wired charging solution, the wireless charging solution provides consumers with more convenience and saves additional charging cables. Applications for wireless charging range from portable electronics, automotive to medical. Today's high-tech society is increasingly eager for convenient charging solutions for a variety of electronic devices. Potential wireless charging market opportunities include automotive, airport and home applications. Today's gaming platforms also offer wireless charging options for game controllers to provide consumers with more convenience. As wireless charging technology becomes more popular, many handset manufacturers have begun offering battery covers that integrate additional circuitry to make the product compatible with wireless charging.
Wireless charging is not a new concept. Electric toothbrushes and razors have been using this charging method for some years. Consumers simply place the device on a base unit to charge the battery without the need for exposed metal contacts. Wireless charging reduces or eliminates charging cables, and can charge multiple devices at the same time by simply placing them on the same charging pad.
Wireless charging is achieved by using an air-core transformer. The primary coil is located on the charging pad and the secondary coil is located in the device itself. The charging pad induces a current in the secondary winding that passes through a full bridge rectifier and additional circuitry within the handheld device to generate a DC voltage to charge the battery. Figure 1 shows a block diagram of a wireless charging circuit. The base is powered by a standard wall outlet. Once the handheld device is placed on the base, the battery begins to charge.
