Portrait lighting is not an easy task. If you use a hot shoe flash without a modeling light, it is even more difficult to predict the shot. However, there are still some basic ways to follow the lighting. Once you have mastered these basic skills, you can extend and play on your own and create something of your own.

Butterfly light

Portrait photography is the first beauty of the beautiful light - the butterfly light, the one in the upper left corner of the picture above.

The usual way of lighting the butterfly light is that the main light source is on the front of the subject's face, projecting from the top to the bottom of the 45° angle to the face of the person, and a shadow is projected below the nose, like a butterfly shape, which can look like a model chin. The tip, the facial features are more three-dimensional, bringing a certain layering to the faces of the characters.

Some star nets may not know what the lighting is, but they will use these lighting methods unconsciously under certain circumstances.

Then there is Rembrandt Light, the second picture in the upper left corner of the first picture.

Rembrandt

The basic light effect of Rembrandt's light is to form a triangular spot on the face of the character, so it is also called triangle light.

We refer to the triangular spot parallel lens or near the lens as positive triangle light. This type of cloth has a narrow light-receiving surface, and most of the characters' faces are in the shadows. The three-dimensional sense is strong, and the facial features of the characters are strongly highlighted and emphasized, which is suitable for correcting face-type shooting. We call the triangular spot away from the lens side called inverted triangle light. Such a triangular light person's face is exposed to light and the dark area is small. The three-dimensional feeling is weakened. It is more suitable for people with a good proportion of facial features, but a face with a thin face.

In the impression, the male star photo used Rembrandt Light to the extreme. Besides the photographer of Wu Yanzu, I can't think of the second one.
