Last year, we reported on Emma, a robotic physiotherapist who is used to massage human patients. At that time, researchers were conducting clinical trials. Now Emma3.0 has been put into use at a Singapore clinic. Emma is a product of the Singapore startup AiTreat, developed by graduate Albert Zhang of Nanyang Technological University.
The purpose of developing Emma is not to replace the human massage therapist, but to help solve the shortage of professional massage therapists. As the population ages, the workload of therapists increases, and this technology will greatly reduce their workload. In addition, Emma can give patients longer massages.
The current model is more compact than the prototype and it also offers more massage programs. It uses sensors to measure the stiffness of tendons and muscles and then turns to a cloud-based artificial intelligence system to determine the appropriate massage force. Emma provides treatment with a single arm that has two silicone tips that mimic human palms and thumbs.
According to the researchers, the patient description stated that the massage provided by Emma was almost the same as that provided by a professional masseur. Emma specializes in providing back and knee massages.
On Monday, Emma 3.0 robots began to provide services at the NovaHealth Chinese Medicine Clinic in Singapore.
