Menlo Micro Introduces New MEMS Power Relays: Smaller, Faster, Smarter

The new DMS intelligent power relay technology opens the door to a broad vertical market segment. To date, many companies have had to endure the limitations of solid-state relays, including high leakage currents, lack of air gaps, and complex heat dissipation, or they have to choose slow, bulky, and expensive electromechanical relay solutions.

“Our DMS technology enables ultra-small, ultra-light power relays that combine the best features of solid-state and mechanical devices,” said Chris Giovanniello, vice president of product development at Menlo Micro. “The market is constantly demanding reductions in size, weight, power and cost. It is now able to meet this demand and create a new control product for the industrial IoT market."

To demonstrate the scalability of the technology, Menlo Micro combines more than 200 MEMS high-voltage switches on the Smart Power Relay Evaluation Board with integrated protection and control systems. This credit card-sized evaluation board can carry 10A DC current without the need for heat dissipation. This MEMS switchgear's ability to handle currents has reached unprecedented levels thanks to Menlo Micro's unique materials, design and wafer level processing technology.


High-power, high-reliability RF switches from Menlo Micro are already being used in medical instruments, test and measurement equipment, and reconfigurable software radios. Typically, these switches are three-terminal devices that operate from 25W to 50W. For intelligent power relays, Menlo Micro has created a fully isolated four-terminal architecture with advanced features such as overcurrent protection. The advantages of this DMS power relay architecture include the following:

- Reduced volume and weight by 80%. - Semiconductor cost structure. Menlo Micro's DMS technology uses wafer-level manufacturing process technology. This allows DMS products to benefit from the scale and cost structure of semiconductor products.
