ST wireless communication chip selects device for IoT connection

China, March 14, 2018 - To help the development of the next generation of smart connected products, such as digital home products, wearables, smart lighting, smart sensors, STMicroelectronics, a semiconductor supplier across multiple electronic applications , referred to as ST, NYSE: STM) introduces a dual-core wireless communication chip that supports new features and higher performance, providing longer battery life and a better end-user experience.

The new STM32WB wireless communication system chip (SoC) integrates a feature-rich Arm Cortex-M4 microcontroller and an Arm Cortex-M0+ core processor. The Arm® Cortex-M4 microcontroller is used to run the main application software; the Arm Cortex-M0+ core is used to lighten the main processor load and perform low-energy Bluetooth (BLE) 5 and IEEE 802.15.4 RF real-time processing tasks. The RF controller can also run other wireless communication protocols simultaneously, including OpenThread, ZigBee, or proprietary communication protocols, providing more connectivity options for device-linked Internet of Things (IoT).

Today, only a handful of vendors have the ability to provide dual-processor wireless communication chips. Dual-core wireless chips separate, independently manage user applications and RF processing for optimal processing performance and integrate large-capacity memory, while other solutions typically use the entry-level Arm Cortex-M industry standard core, which limits the performance of the architecture and Expansion ability.

By integrating the higher performance Cortex-M4 core with the Cortex-M0+ network processor, the STM32WB utilizes ST's ultra-low-power microcontroller (MCU) technology to integrate superior RF performance and longer battery life. The system chip also integrates the basic circuitry (balun) required to connect the antenna. In other solutions, engineers usually have to design their own baluns; they also integrate large-capacity system memory, user memory, hardware encryption, and customer key memory ( Used for brand and intellectual property protection).

Michel Buffa, vice president and general manager of microcontroller products at STMicroelectronics, said: "Now, end users need better and cheaper smart interconnect products. To help developers meet these demanding requirements, the STM32WB family offers advanced integration. And uncompromising dual-core performance. In addition, the STM32-compliant development ecosystem offers design advantages that dramatically reduce time-to-market for new products such as luminaires, fitness trackers, medical monitors, Beacon devices, tags, and security devices. ”

In the first quarter of 2018, engineering samples of the STM32WB 100-pin WLCSP package were available to major customers.

technical details:

As the upgraded product of the world-leading STM32L4 series of ultra-low-power microcontrollers, the STM32WB platform introduces on-chip wireless communication capabilities for STMicroelectronics' STM32 family for the first time. The robust, low-power 2.4GHz RF circuit delivers only 5.5mA of transmit power and 3.8mA of receive power. The STM32WB provides an abundance of -102dBm RF link budget with an output power of +6dBm. Utilizing ST's single-chip balun expertise, the on-chip balun integrates up to nine external components.

To extend battery life and perform complex functions, the new product integrates a wide range of STM32 digital analog peripherals, including timers, ultra-low power comparators, 12/16-bit SAR analog-to-digital converters, capacitive touch-screen controllers, LCD controller and crystalless USB 2.0 FS, I2C, SPI, SAI audio interface and industry standard communication interface supporting Quad-SPI for on-chip execution.

To aid designers in developing and simplifying RF testing, the STM32WB platform is equipped with a dedicated connection tool STM32CubeMonitor-RF (order code: STM32CubeMonRF). Users can also take advantage of the STM32CubeMX pin/clock configurator and code generator, as well as peripheral drivers, middleware, code examples, and a dedicated STM32 Nucleo development board to shorten product development cycles.

The STM32WB dual-core architecture performs application code and network processing tasks in real time. As a result, developers can flexibly optimize system resources, power consumption, and bill of materials (BOM) costs while ensuring a superior user experience.

The Cortex-M0+ network processing controller includes an industry-standard certified protocol stack, including ST's OpenThread protocol stack and Bluetooth 5 protocol stack with multiple profiles supporting Mesh 1.0. RF Circuitry Universal HCI and Media Access Control Layer (MAC) give developers the flexibility to choose the Low Energy Bluetooth (BLE) protocol stack or other proprietary IEEE 802.15.4 protocol stack.

Advanced protection features are critical to protecting user data for smart connected products and helping device vendors protect their intellectual property. New product protection features include embedded customer key storage, elliptic curve encryption engine for public key authentication (PKA), and AES 256-bit encryption algorithm hardware support. Device vendors can also use Secure Firmware Update (SFU) and Root Security Service (RSS) support to verify over-the-air (OTA) software updates and enhance software installation and upgrade security.

The STM32WB products are available in a 48-pin UQFN, 68-pin VQFN or a general-purpose I/O (GPIO) 72-port 100-pin WLCSP package, each of which can be specified in any of three memory combinations: 256KB Flash/ 128KB RAM, 512KB-Flash/256KB-RAM or 1MB-Flash/256KB-RAM.
