On January 9th, TDK Corporation and Asahi Kasei Microelectronics Co., Ltd. (AKM) jointly developed a high-precision 3-axis magnetometer. The magnetometer combines the highly sensitive tunneling magnetoresistive (TMR) components developed by TDK with the advanced electronic compass ASIC designed by AKM into a small LGA 11-pin package. The new TMR magnetometer is attached to a single chip with a miniature size of only 1.6 mm x 1.6 mm x 0.6 mm and features the industry's lowest RMS noise of only 40 nT-rms and an output data rate of 100. At Hz, the current consumption is also very low, only 40 μA.
Thanks to its high sensitivity of 10 nT/LSB*, the magnetic sensor can detect small changes in the magnetic field very accurately, enabling highly accurate detection of position and orientation with the help of the Earth's magnetic field or magnetic field generator. These unique features make the TMR magnetometer suitable for use on compact electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, game console controllers and a wide range of wearable devices, as well as other applications that require high position and orientation accuracy, such as : Virtual reality, augmented reality or mixed reality (VR, AR and MR) or indoor navigation.
