Renesas Electronics and ESCRYPT collaborate to develop integrated hardware and software protection automotive ECU solutions with extremely high security

November 9, 2016, Tokyo, Germany, Bochum, Germany - Renesas Electronics Corporation, the world's leading supplier of semiconductor solutions, and ESCRYPT Ltd. ("ESCRYPT"), a leading provider of embedded security systems, today announced Collaborate to develop an integrated software and hardware platform solution with high security to protect automotive electronic control units (ECUs).

The new combined soft/hardware platform solution includes Renesas Electronics RH850/P1x-C Series Automotive Safety Microcontrollers (MCUs) integrated on a single chip: Functional safety, safety and vehicle control via ESCRYPT's secure software stack system CycurHSM Network technology to achieve highly complex automotive safety solutions.

The new solution reduces development time and integrates security functions into automotive ECU applications that focus on network information security. In addition, the solution can be used as a springboard to automate driving by accelerating the integration of safety and security functions.

In the era of autonomous driving, in-vehicle infotainment networks, vehicle-to-vehicle communication (V2V) and road-to-road communication (V2I) will become mainstream. The interconnection between these networks will enable the system to obtain traffic information and other information that may affect the driving experience. It also requires robust security measures to ensure that the system is protected from unauthorized external intrusions.

The RH850 / P1x-C Series integrates hardware security modules with coprocessors that support data encryption, authentication, and random number generation to meet the security requirements of these mission-critical tasks in vehicle systems. CycurHSM is a secure software stack that is fully compatible with the RH850 / P1x-C MCU and adds security features in the hardware through other security services such as Secure Boot, Secure Flash and Debug.

New use cases, such as software update over-the-air (OTA) or advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and generated in-vehicle communications, require higher levels of ECU protection against unauthorized intrusion or malicious intrusion and manipulation of vehicles . Therefore, in addition to the protection software, hardware security protection within the ECU is also essential.

The global launch of Renesas Electronics and the ESCRYPT portfolio enhances the security of interconnected, highly automated vehicles, providing customers with high value and addressing the security issues mentioned above.

Key features of the combined soft/hardware platform solution: (1) Combined solution utilizes highly optimized HSM technology to promote the safety functions required for vehicles in the era of autonomous driving

The combined software/hardware solution includes Renesas Electronics' 40nm (nm) automotive RH850/P1x-C on-chip hardware security module (HSM), ICU-M (Note 1), and ESCRYPT's highly optimized software to ensure ECU safety is achieved The highest level.

ICU-M provides security services based on private and public key cryptography that perform advanced network security defenses. ICU-M includes dedicated security code/data flash, enhanced debug control via dynamic authentication, fast AES (Note 2) engine with multiple execution contexts and complex encryption modes, and true AIS-31 (Note 3) The pseudo-random number generation by the random number generator, as well as many other security features.

CycurHSM is a scalable solution ranging from SHE (Note 4) and SHE+ to full HSM functions (such as security flash, secure in-vehicle communication, secure boot advanced mechanisms, secure debugging or feature activation). CycurHSM runs on ICU-M and provides a dedicated software interface to take advantage of the full capabilities of HSM technology. ESCRYPT's HSM security stack will be available to more Renesas Electronics MCUs in the near future.

(2) Simplify the verification of security functions, significantly reducing development and implementation time by 90%

ECU developers can simplify the verification of required safety functions with the best matching components of Renesas Electronics and ESCRYPT. For existing AUTOSAR applications, since the combined software/hardware solution is fully compliant with AUTOSAR, no further development of security functions is required, and the remaining tasks can be attributed to a simple configuration of the software, which reduces development time by 90%.

For new applications, regardless of compliance with the AUTOSAR standard, a clean interface provided by a combined software/hardware allows system developers to focus on advanced software development without worrying about low-level or hardware-specific issues. As a result, total development time can be significantly reduced by at least 50% in new applications.

(3) Provide additional security services to further optimize security features and add value to highly automated vehicles

Security solutions can be further enriched with additional security services such as risk analysis and efficient security concepts and software products such as ESCRYPT's key management. The security solution can also be integrated into the complete AUTOSAR stack provided by ESCRYPT's parent company ETAS.

The jointly developed platform solution is a turnkey, high quality solution that integrates multiple hardware and software products from two automotive specialists. Through the complete software and hardware approach jointly developed by Renesas Electronics and ESCRYPT, the safety and performance levels stipulated by the new automotive use cases can be achieved to avoid remote attacks and various security issues.

The global combination of Renesas Electronics and ESCRYPT products will enhance the security of interconnected, highly automated vehicles and provide added value to customers worldwide.
