Mini LED demand is strong Samsung plans Sanan Optoelectronic Mini LED production capacity

According to industry sources, Samsung Electronics has almost ordered China's LED epitaxial wafer and chip manufacturer Sanan Optoelectronics' Xiamen Mini LED production capacity to ensure that it will launch a large-size high-end LCD TV backlight chip in the third quarter of 2018. According to sources, Samsung has prepaid $16.83 million for the chip supply.

In the past year, Samsung, the leader of the global color TV market, was squeezed by the old rivals Sony and LG in the high-end market, which made Samsung very unpleasant. On the road of "guaranteeing high", in addition to continuing to bet on quantum dot TV, Samsung is still preparing "the other hand", that is, MicroLED display TV.

As early as this year's CES conference, Samsung has already exhibited the world's first MicroLED display TV, a modular TV with a size of 146 inches, which was named "The Wall" by Samsung. According to foreign media reports, this overbearing product will be introduced to the market in the second half of this year, but the price is too high, the initial price is 300,000 US dollars.

However, the higher pricing of the product still does not prevent Samsung from launching the MicroLED display TV. Samsung recently announced a “prepayment agreement” with Sanan Optoelectronics and paid a prepayment of approximately US$16.83 million from Xiamen Sanan to ensure that Xiamen Sanan will give priority to Samsung. The Sanan's Mini LED capacity has almost been packaged by Samsung, and Samsung is also expected to push the high-end Mini LED TV to the customized market in the third quarter.

China's LED chip makers Huacan Optoelectronics and Xiamen Ganzhao Optoelectronics have also begun research and development of MicroLED and Mini LED technology, while China's LED packaging service provider Guoxing Optoelectronics established MicroLED and Mini LED Research Center in early March 2018. In 2019, Ronda's Mini LED package revenue ratio is likely to exceed 10%. Rongchuang Energy Technology, a Taiwanese LED packaging service provider, has partnered with Innolux to develop Mini LED backlighting solutions for smartphones, LCD TVs and automotive display applications.

Compared to the cost of an OLED smartphone panel of about $75, a chip backlight for an LCD smartphone panel using 4,000-5,000 Mini LCDs costs only about $10, and the overall cost of the LCD panel is still lower than the cost of the OLED panel. Backlighting of 15.6-inch notebook panels and LCD TV panels requires 2,000 and 5,000-10,000 micro LED chips, respectively.
