STMicroelectronics (ST; New York Stock Exchange: STM) introduces a miniature wireless charging chipset that saves board space, simplifies chassis design and sealing, and shortens development cycles for ultra-compact wearable sports equipment , fitness monitors, medical sensors and remote controls.
The STWBC-WA charging transmitter controller cooperates with the STWLC04 wireless charging receiver. It uses smaller coils than the coils used in other wireless charging chipsets on the market. It only uses 11mm diameter coils at the receiving end and 20mm line graphs at the transmitting end. Up to 1W of power makes the appearance of the application device smaller and slimmer. If large coils and full-bridge circuits are used at the transmitter, the transmission capacity can be increased to 3W. Because traditional charging interfaces are no longer needed, wireless charging simplifies housing design and sealing technology to prevent dust or moisture from entering the machine.
This full-featured chipset supports wireless charging of lithium-ion or lithium-poly batteries and includes safety features such as foreign object detection (FOD, Foreign-Object DetecTIon), active transmitter presence detection, and receiver overheat protection. The transmitter chip has built-in drivers. This machine supports half-bridge and full-bridge topology. The firmware configuration is simple and optional, so that customers can quickly develop overall solutions or custom applications. The receiver chip supports direct charging, reduces board size, and includes a built-in 32-bit microcontroller core, a high-efficiency buck converter with synchronous rectification, and an internal driver.
With STMicroelectronics' plug-and-play STEVAL-ISB038V1 evaluation board kit, developers can quickly start wireless charging projects. The development kit includes a transmitter board and a receiver board [1]. Through the Graphical User Interface (GUI), developers can monitor system behavior and optimize parameters. In addition to the Gerber files and bill of materials, the kit includes a user manual.
The STWBC-WA Transmitter Controller is available in a VFQFPN32 package. The STWLC04 receiver chip is available in a 3.12mm x 4.73mm 77-bump flip-chip package.
