Japanese technology giant Sony is considering using blockchain to store digital copyright data.
In an application filed by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on Thursday, Sony explained that the current digital rights management (DRM) solution aimed at interoperability "may not be very reliable, if the copyright relies on a single offer If the business or system goes out of business or fails, the user will lose all the content obtained."
The submitted file shows that the blockchain can store the required identification information to ensure that users can view the products they purchased.
A DRM system is a technology that allows only users who purchase access rights to access copyrighted content. For example, Sony cites UltraViolet, a cloud-based digital rights locker.
The application was filed jointly by Sony and its subsidiary Sony Pictures Entertainment Ltd., which takes a movie as an example.
However, Sony also believes that blockchain-based systems can manage "various types of content or other data, such as movies, television, video, music, audio, games, scientific materials, medical data, etc."
The application describes several potential use cases for this technology. One of them is that each user's access rights are encoded on a dedicated blockchain. The ledger begins with an originating block that stores identity information about the user. When a user obtains the copyright of certain content (for example, downloading a movie by purchase), these copyrights will be submitted to the blockchain.
At the same time, Sony said:
The DRM computer system will verify the copyright in the blockchain and then decrypt the specific content as needed. The computer system can operate in different ways, including by a "DRM Agent" that resides on the user device.
As previously reported, Sony has been investigating other applications of blockchain technology, including use cases for validating user data and managing educational resources.
